Memorial Day Weekend Claims Multiple Lives on Our North Carolina Roadways
June 15, 2022Last month, our Charlotte boat accident attorneys discussed tips for staying safe on the water way over Memorial Day weekend as the summer boating season officially kicked off in North Carolina and across the nation.
As thousands of boaters took to the water, hundreds of thousands more were crowding our roadways as a busy Memorial Day holiday weekend saw travelers heading to Lake Norman, the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, and the ACC Baseball Championship game at Truist Field.
As a result, troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol also had a busy holiday weekend.
North Carolina Traffic Accident Fatalities Over the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend
The Memorial Day weekend kicked off what troopers call the “100 Deadly Days of Summer”. The summer months are when they generally see the most fatalities on our North Carolina roads.
During the Memorial Day holiday period, state troopers investigated six fatal collisions that resulted in seven deaths on our North Carolina highways between 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 22nd and midnight, Monday, May 25th.
The traffic deaths happened on:
- NC 108 in Polk County
- NC 130 in Columbus County
- US 17 in Pender County
- NC 24/27 in Montgomery County
- I-485 in Mecklenburg County
- NC 130 in Brunswick County, where two people were killed
In addition to the passenger car vehicle crashes that claimed seven lives, a bus crash on I-77 in Charlotte sent four people to the hospital and resulted in the death of an 87-year-old woman.
State troopers reported the bus accident was caused by inattentive driving. The bus driver missed the exit, then he overcorrected and tried to get off the interstate at the last minute, causing the crash.
The bus driver has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and unsafe movement.
