NC Boating Accident Statistics

Every year, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) publishes a report on boating accidents and fatalities. According to the 2016 report, there were 147 boat accidents in North Carolina that year, down slightly from 166 in 2015. However, while the total number of accidents decreased, the number of fatal accidents climbed. In 2015, 21 out of 166 accidents were fatal (12.7%), while in 2016, 22 out of 147 accidents were fatal (15%).

Of all the counties in North Carolina, Mecklenburg County had one of the highest boating accident figures, accounting for 12 of the documented crashes. In most counties, this number was 0 or in the single digits. Two of the 12 crashes (16.7%) involved alcohol, which – as these statistics illustrate – is often a factor when boating accidents occur. Just as it is illegal to drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol, it is also unlawful to operate a boat while intoxicated. When boaters ignore these laws, the risk of a high-speed collision increases.
